Class Descriptions & Attire

BALLET

  • LITTLES
    The littles class is a dance discovery class for potty-trained 2 ½ – 3 ½ year-olds introducing young children to the joys of motion and music through dance (ballet) and creative movements. This class builds a foundation for any future genre of choice.
  • LEVEL 1 – LEVEL 3 BALLET
    Ballet is an artistic art form of movement that uses precision and grace. In level 1 through level 3 ballet classes, your dancer will learn the fundamentals of ballet. These classes are designed specifically for new dancers and will introduce basic technique, coordination, vocabulary, and the joy of dance.
  • LEVEL 3.5 – LEVEL 4 BALLET
    Ballet is an artistic art form of movement that uses precision and grace. In level 3.5 and level 4, ballet dancers will expand upon what they have learned in the beginning levels of their training. These dancers will continue working on their technique, coordination and body alignment and begin to develop their musicality and artistry. Dancers must work at home on their skills and technique in addition to their studio time.
  • LEVEL 5 BALLET
    Ballet is an artistic art form of movement that uses precision and grace. Level 5 ballet takes a dancers technical training to the next level. It focuses on refining each of the dancers’ skill set as they commit to their training. This curriculum will build well-rounded dancers with a strong technique foundation, and a true passion for the beautiful artform. This is a way of life where the dancer is working at home or in the studio on a daily basis.

CONTEMPORARY

Contemporary dance is a style of expressive dance that combines elements of several genre including modern, jazz, lyrical, acro, and classical ballet. In Shalom Movement Contemporary dance classes your dancer will learn how to move through floorwork, versatility and improvisation. Contemporary dance strives to connect the mind and body through rich, freeing and fluid dance movements. A classical ballet class is mandatory when taking contemporary.

TAP

Tap dance is a style of dance characterized by using the sound of tap shoes striking the floor as a form of percussion. At Shalom Movement Tap dance focuses on rhythm, musicality and syncopation. Taking tap has many benefits for young dancers such as improving coordination, strengthening feet, ankles and legs, as well as helping dancers develop a great sense of musical timing.

MODERN

Modern dance is a specific style of dance that focuses on expression over technique. Modern dance is filled with grounded movement that requires full body motions. Shalom Movement Modern classes will work though elements of Space, Time, Effort, Movement and Form. Through this approach dancers will learn improvisation, choreography, spatial awareness and musical awareness.

COMPANY

Petite Company, Youth Company, Junior Company & Senior Company
Shalom Movement Companies are for dancers 6 – 18 years of age who desire a challenging and competitive team environment. Dancers are passionate, hardworking and committed to improving their gift of dance. Company Members are required to take a set number of dance class hours per week and will compete at 2 Dance Competitions during the spring season. Companies are leveled ultimately by skill level and overall technique. Age is considered.

ATTIRE

PRE-POINTE

Pre-Pointe ballet classes are invitational only classes that are designed to get dancers prepared and ready for their very first pair of pointe shoes. At Shalom Movement age is not necessarily a prerequisite, but dancers typically start pre-pointe classes around 9 – 12 years of age. This class focuses on building strong feet, ankles, legs and core muscles. This class emphases correct body alignment and correct classical ballet technique. Pre-pointe classes allow instructors to assess readiness, offering an atmosphere for proper evaluation of important skills before dancers move up to Pointe classes.

POINTE

Pointe technique is part of the classical ballet technique where the ballet dancer supports all body weight on the tips of fully extended feet within pointe shoes. At Shalom Movement age is not necessarily a prerequisite, but dancers typically start pointe classes around 12 – 14 years of age. Pointe requires not only strong ankles and feet, but strong leg muscles, core and upper body as well. Pointe classes will take the dancers’ ballet training to the next level focusing on building strong muscles, body alignment, balance, coordination and artistry. Pointe classes are invitation only.

JAZZ

Jazz dance is an upbeat, performance-based dance style that requires high energy, style and technique. There are several types of jazz dance including; Broadway jazz, swing jazz, and contemporary jazz. Shalom Movement dancers will learn jumps and turns, posture, center control, as well as strong and sharp movements from jazz choreography. Jazz class requires moderate to intense stretching in order to warm up the muscles and prevent injuries. A classical ballet class is mandatory when taking jazz.

ACRO

The Shalom Movement Acro/Tumble classes are based on safe and effective progressions with proven results in four divisions of Acro-Dance; flexibility, strength, balancing and tumbling. Students will begin with basic exercises such as forward rolls, cartwheels, and beginner balances. More advanced students will continue to add to their repertoire with more advanced tumbling (back walkovers, back handsprings, aerials), balances and partner lifts. Acro class requires moderate to intense stretching in order to warm up the muscles and prevent injuries.

HIP-HOP

Hip-hop dance classes involve a variety of styles ranging from breaking, locking and popping. Dancers will learn how to isolate different parts of their body, groove to different rhythms, and practice gaining self-confidence. Shalom Movement beginner to intermediate classes will focus on the fundamental movement of grooves, body mechanics, and how to pick up choreographed movement. Intermediate to advance classes will learn complex and challenging combinations, as well as working on developing their own personal style.

CLOGGING

Clogging is a type of folk dance in which a dancer’s footwear is used percussively by striking the heel, the toe, or both against the floor or each other to create audible rhythms, usually to the downbeat with the heel keeping the rhythm. Cloggers dance with an up-and-down body motion that requires high-energy and stamina. Shalom Movement Clogging classes will teach beginning to advanced percussion footwork, rhythm’s and formation changes.

BREAKDANCE

Breakdance is an energetic and acrobatic style of dance typically performed to hip-hop or upbeat music. It is largely improvisational and includes stylized footwork and athletic moves such as spinning on knees, hands or head. Dancers in Shalom Movement Breakdance classes will learn toprock, downrock, power moves and freezes.
